ABYDOS

Ancient Greek city on the Asiatic side of the Hellespont opposite Sestos, colonized from Miletus. There Xerxes spanned the narrowest part of the strait with a bridge of boats for the passage of his army into Europe. From Abydos, too, Leander swam the Hellespont nightly to visit his beloved Hero, priestess of Aphrodite in Sestos.
