ABBEVILLE


Abbeville (1)
Town of south-central Louisiana, and seat Vermilion Parish. The town's economy is based on rice, sugar cane, cattle, and furs from animals trapped in the nearby coastal marsh. Oil wells in the vicinity. Inc., 1850.


Abbeville (2)
City of western South Carolina, and seat of Abbeville Country. John C. Calhoun, twice vice-president of the United States, was born there. Abbeville is sometimes known as the birthplace of the Confederacy, because a secessionist meeting was held in the city in 1860. Settled in the 1700's, It was incorporated in 1895.
