ABBOTT, DOUGLAS CHARLES

Canadian statesman and jurist. Abbott was born in lennoxville, Quebec, and educated at Bishop's College and Mcgill University. He served Overseas in World War I with the Canadian forces and the Royal Air Force. After practicing law in Montreal, he entered the House of Commons as a Liberal in 1940; he was re-elected in 1945, 1949, and 1953. He served (1945-46) as minister of national defense. For eight years (1946-54) he was minister of finance. He was appointed (1954) to the Supreme Court of Canada.
