ABBOTT, GRACE (1878 - 1939)

American social worker. Born in Grand Island, Nebr., she received degrees from Grand Island College and The University of Chicago. She was director of the Child Labor Division of the U.S. Children's Bureau from 1917 to 1919, and its chief from 1921 to 1934. From 1934 to 1939 she was professor of public welfare at the University of Chicago. She wrote on child welfare, labor legislation, and immigration.
