ABBREVIATIONS

Represent the arbitrary shortening of words by contraction or by omission (attorney to atty., Connecticut to Conn.), or occasionally by substitution (pages to pp.). In modern writing the use of abbreviations to save time and space has become extremely common. In fact such forms as F.B.I., UNESCO, and G.O.P. have largely replaced the original word and phrases.
