ABDEL KRIM (c. 1890 - 1963)

Moroccan leader, and opponent of the French and Spanish protectorate over Morocco. A tribesman from the Moroccan Riff mountains, Abdel Krim (Arab. Abd al-Karim) was educated in Spain. He led a revolt against the Spanish, and by 1924 they had abandoned all their inland positions. Abdel Krim's expansion brought him into conflict with the French also, and in 1926 he was forced to surrender to them and was exiled to Reunion. In 1947 he escaped from the French and took asylum in Egypt where he died.
