ABDUL RAHMAN, TUANKU SIR

Ruler of the Malay state of Negri Sembilan and first Yang di-Pertuan Agong (head of state) of the independent Federation of Malaya. Born in Negri Sembilan on the west coast of Malaya, he was educated in Malaya and England. After he was called to the Bar in London, he served for some years in the Malayan Civil Service before succeeding to his father’s throne in 1993. in 1957, he was paramount rulers new the new constitution of the Federation of Malaya. Both Tuanku Abdul Rahman and his consort, Tengku Ampuan Kursiah, gained much affection and respect from their new subjects, and his death on April 1, 1960, was greatly mourned by the people of the Federation of Malaya.
