ABEOKUTA

City of southwestern Nigeria, and headquarters of Abeokuta Province, in the Western Region. The city was founded about 1830. It is one of the cities of the Yoruba people and houses many farmers. It is a market center for cacao beans, yams, kola nuts, citrus fruits, and cassava, and is linked by railway with Lagos and with the interior. Abeokuta started in the 1820’s as a refuge from slave raiders.
