ABINGDON

Town of southwestern Virginia, and seat of Washington County. It is the states's largest burley tobacco market and is also the center for southwestern Virginia's livestock auction. Dairy products are made there and the city is known for the manufacture of china decorated in American colonial patterns. The annual Virginia Highlands Festival of Arts, Crafts, and Antiques is held in Abingdon each August. Barter Theater was founded in the town in 1932 to encourage experimental stage works. Since 1946 it has been the state theater of Virginia, receiving a state subsidy. The city was settled in 1776 as Black's Fort, and became a settlement on the Wilderness Trail.
