Flowering maple, genus of herbs and shrubs of the mallow family (Malvaceae). There are about 80 pieces, all native to warm regions of both hemispheres. The plants, which may reach a height of 30 ft. in certain South American species, have long-stalked leaves, often attractively marked with yellow. The flowers, bell or trumpet-shaped, and usually drooping, are up to 3.5 in. across. They display a wide range of colors.
