ABAKAN

City of Soviet Union, in south Krasnoyark Territory of the Russian S.F.S.R. It is located on the Abakan River, just above its junction with the Yenisei River in central Siberia. Abakan is the capital of the Khakass Autonomous Oblast. The city is a railroad center at the junction of the South Siberian Railroad leading west to the Kuznestk Basin and a spur of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. Its industries include include sawmilling, the manufacture of furniture and clothing, and food processing. The town was founded early in the 18th century as a fortress, and until 1931 it was known as Ust Abakanskoye. Inc. as city, 1931.
