ABEL, NIELS HENRIK

Norwegian mathematician, noted for his proof that the solution of a general quintic equation is impossible. During his short life, which was plagued by poverty and illness, he showed the need for studying the convergence of infinite series and found that inversion of the elliptic integrals leads to doubly periodic functions. His name is attached to theorems in the theory of groups, in the theory of functions, and in integral equations.
