Second son of Adam and Eve, and younger brother of Cain. In genesis 4 God accepted Abel's sacrifice of a sheep, but not Cain's gift of vegetables, and Cain, in anger, killed Abel. This divine acceptance was attributed later to Abel's being more reighteous than Cain.
