ABERDEEN AND TEMAIR, JOHN CAMPBELL GORDON, 1ST MARQUESS OF

English colonial administrator, lord lieutenant of Ireland (1886; 1905-1915), and governor-general of Canada (1893-1898). His term of office in Canada was notable for ethnic and religious rivalry between English and French Canadians. Between 1894 and 1896 three changes of government occurred, requiring considerable direction on his part. Both he and Lady Aberdeen took great interest in social problems; she founded two organizations that have been important in Canadian life, the National Council of Women and the Victorian Order of Nurses. Aberdeen was also a popular administrator in Ireland. In 1913 he was elected lord rector of St. Andrews University in Fife, Scotland. And in 1916 created 1st marquess of Aberdeen and Temair. He had succeeded to the earldom of Aberdeen some 50 years earlier.
