Trade center of north-central Kansas, and seat of Dickinsion County, located in a wheat-growing area. The town was settled in 1858 and incorporated in 1869. In its early days it was the most important shipping point for cattle arriving over the Chisolm Trail from Texas. Wild Bill Hickok was marshal of Abilene in 1871. Abilene was the boyhood home of Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the Eisenhower Museum and Dwight D. Eisenhower Library are located there.
