ACETALDEHYDE

Or ethanal, CH3CHO, is a colorless, flammable liquid with a pungent odor. It used in the preparation of many chemical products, including acetic acid. It is also used in the manufacture of dyes and plastics and in the silvering of mirrors. Acetaldehyde is prepared by the action of water on acetylene or from ethyl alcohol either by oxidation or by passage over hot copper. It may also be obtained from paraldehyde. In a German process air is used to oxidize ethylene to acetaldehyde. Boiling point, 21° C. (69.8° F.); freezing point, - 123.5° C. (- 190.3° F.).
