Grito de gloria (Shout of Glory), 1894, dealth with uruguay's struggle for independence. He is best known for the novel
Soledad (Solitude), 1894, a notable example of the Gaucho novel, in which the folklore and character of the inhabitants of the pampas are vividly presented. He served first as a senator and then became successively a minister to the United States, Argentina, Italy, and Brazil.
